Each of the members of the Township Council have been elected to four year terms, and each has as their goal to serve you to the best of their abilities. After each members’ name, their political affiliation, if any, is listed. The date following each is the year when his/her current term expires.
All of the members of the Township Council make themselves available to speak or meet with any member of our community, and all are more than happy to listen to your comments or suggestions, or to answer any question you may have. Mayor Charlie Carley and his wife, Christine, raised their family in the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick Township. Their daughter, Katie, graduated from Rutgers University – New Brunswick with a BS in Applied Physics and the New Jersey Institute of Technology – Newark with a MS in Civil Engineering. She pursues a career in Civil Engineering. Their son, Pat, attends the University of Montana – Missoula, with a major in Finance. Both graduated from South Brunswick High School.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer and also as a Professional Planner by the State of New Jersey, Mayor Carley has earned degrees from Rutgers – New Brunswick and NJIT – Newark.
Elected in 2004 to South Brunswick Township Council, he has worked with his colleagues to assure that the municipal portion of the property tax is stable. He has also been keen to enhance the Senior Center, which has benefitted from a number of upgrades during his tenure, including the addition of the South Brunswick Wellness Center under the management of Penn Medicine/Princeton Health. Mr. Carley has been an active member of an engaged governing body.
Mayor Carley has earned numerous awards, including the American Society of Civil Engineers’ “Service to the People” Award. The award recognizes individuals for their service to the general public; selection is based on the nominee’s involvement in the planning, design, or construction of the people-serving works of the civil engineering profession. Mayor Carley has also been recognized by the NJ State Legislature, the YMCA, and the Indo-American Cultural Foundation of Central New Jersey for his civic endeavors.
Councilman Ken Bierman was first appointed to office via a special election held in April 2017. As of January 2024, Councilman Bierman has been appointed Deputy Mayor. Prior to his election as councilman, he served South Brunswick’s Zoning Board for four years starting in 2012. Having been a life-long resident of the Township, Bierman is a South Brunswick High School alumnus who later pursued his Bachelo’rs degree in Business Administration and Economics and minor in Statistics at Rutgers University. The current Facilities Manager for an IT infrastructure company, Bierman has extensive experiences with budgets, forecasting, compliance and fiscal responsibility. Serving on South Brunswick’s Planning Board, Environmental and Shade Tree Commission, and Municipal Alliance Councilman Bierman has demonstrated a keen interest in supporting local governmnent. Dedicated to serving our community Bierman was a Monmouth Junction Fire Department volunteer for six years and later a coach and director for recreational baseball and soccer. Currently, Councilman Bierman lives in Monmouth Junction with his wife Marta and has one son, Michael.
Councilwoman Patricia (Patty) Germain is the newly elected councilwoman as of January 2024. Moving to South Brunswick in 1984 with her husband Chris, they raised their son Shawn, and later their grandson, Christopher who are both graduates of South Brunswick Township High School. During her time as a parent in the school district, Patty was an active member of the PTA, room parent activities, and sporting events to show support for the children and the school community. Her son Shawn has since become a licensed electrician owning a local small business and working for Middlesex County trades department. Christopher, her grandson, is also gainfully employed within the trades.
Patty has her formal education in accounting and has owned and operated her family tax accounting business in South Brunswick for over 38 years. She is an active member of St. Cecilias Roman Catholic Church of Monmouth Junction where she serves on several ministries and volunteers to teach CCD to the young parish members. Past work experience also includes Senior Animal Keeper for Middlesex County Parks, where she cared for the county zoos and enjoyed volunteering her time with special needs children at local community events.
Patty’s goal as council woman is to continue her passion for community outreach while also maintaining the goal for lower taxes. In addition, she has a passion for honoring our Military and supporting our Police officers. She hopes to focus on making sure they get the respect and appreciation they deserve to keep our South Brunswick community safe for all.
Councilwoman Ann Grover was appointed to South Brunswick Township Council in 2018. Councilwoman Grover has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science and is the current Purchasing Specialist for the Office of the Purchasing Agent of Middlesex County. Having served the County for the past twenty-five years, Councilwoman Grover is responsible for employing adequate practices in the procurement of goods and services necessary for effective and efficient operations. She is also the acting liaison to the South Brunswick Commission on Women and has been an active member of the community, serving as the Committeewoman to the South Brunswick Democratic Municipal Organization. In the past, Councilwoman Grover has been a vital contributor to the South Brunswick High School Parent Teacher Organization and is a current Advisory Board member of AFSCME – the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. A resident of South Brunswick for thirty-seven years, Councilwoman Grover currently lives in Kendall Park with her husband, Vince and has one granddaughter, Kanika.
Councilwoman Jo Hochman has served South Brunswick’s council since 2013. Prior to her role as Councilwoman, she was an integral part of the Municipal Alliance, the Zoning Board and the Planning Board for several years. Councilwoman Hochman graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and has since worked as a consultant as well as a trainer for Child Abuse NJ. A public advocate for children’s rights, Hochman coordinated the national EPIC program – Every Person Influences Children – which focuses on helping families, schools, and communities in raising children to become responsible and successful adults. In addition, as liaison for several committees Hochman has been active in the Advisory Board of Health, NJ State Boards of Health, NJ League of Municipalities, the Library Board of Trustees and the Arts Commission. Hochman has aided efforts in several projects including the Performing Arts Center, the Women’s Commission and the planning and zoning of areas of South Brunswick. It is to no surprise that Hochman is also a recipient of the prestigious and honorable Women’s Commission Award. A South Brunswick resident for forty-one years, Councilwoman Hochman raised both her children in South Brunswick and currently resides in Dayton. She is the grandmother of four children and enjoys playing bridge in her free time.
