On December 2nd, a skunk was killed by a resident’s pet in the vicinity of New Road, west of U.S Route #1. The skunk was then turned over to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory for testing. The State Laboratory reported this afternoon the skunk tested positive for rabies. This is the 14th rabid animal reported within Middlesex County for 2017 and the third (3) rabid animal reported in the Township.
The South Brunswick Health Department continues to monitor rabies cases within the municipality. Residents should report wild animals showing signs of unusual behavior to the Police Department. Additionally, it is recommended that residents should avoid contact with wild animals and immediately report any bites from wild or domestic animals to your local health department and consult a physician as soon as possible. Finally, be sure that all family pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and licenses.
Please contact the Director – Health Officer with any concerns.
